SMS Messaging Terms
These terms describe the text messages PrefCA sends, how you opt in, how you opt out, and what the messages cost. PrefCA sends SMS only to people who have asked for it, and only about their own PrefCA account.

This page is written in plain language to explain how PrefCA works. It is a starting version that is being finalized with legal counsel and may be updated. It is not legal advice, and using PrefCA does not, by itself, satisfy any legal or regulatory obligation you may have. For a countersigned agreement, Business Associate Agreement (BAA), or Data Processing Agreement (DPA), contact legal@prefca.com.
1. Program description
PrefCA is operated by PrefCA LLC, an Ohio limited liability company. PrefCA sends SMS text messages from a single United States phone number to users of the PrefCA application who have opted in. Messages are transactional notifications about your PrefCA account. PrefCA does not send marketing or promotional text messages. Messages identify the sender as “Preference Card App”, the product name of PrefCA.
PrefCA messages are designed to contain only a short program identifier and a link back to the application. They are never intended to contain patient information, and the application checks each message body before sending it.
2. Message types
Depending on how you use PrefCA, you may receive the following kinds of messages:
- Training assignment notifications — a link to a training requirement or quiz that has been assigned to you.
- Preference-card sharing notifications — a link to a preference card that has been shared with you. This message type is not currently sent; your consent covers it so it can be turned on without asking you again.
- Phone verification codes — a one-time code sent only when you add a phone number to your account and request a code. These are sent through a separate verification service and stop when you finish or cancel verification.
3. Message frequency
Message frequency varies. It depends on how active your organization is on PrefCA: how often training is assigned to you and how often cards are shared with you. Most users receive a few messages per month. Verification codes are sent one at a time, only when you request one.
4. How to opt in
There is no public or keyword-based SMS signup. You receive PrefCA notification messages only after two separate actions inside your own PrefCA account:
- First, you add a phone number under Account → Security → Phone verification and confirm it with a one-time code sent to that phone.
- Second, under Account → Notification preferences, you choose that verified phone number and press “Grant SMS consent”. The consent is recorded per organization and per phone number, and the disclosure below is shown beside the button. Nothing is pre-selected. You then receive one confirmation text that repeats the STOP and HELP instructions.
By granting consent, you agree to receive recurring SMS text messages from PrefCA about training assignments and preference-card sharing for the organization you selected. Message frequency varies. Messages may include links to app.prefca.com. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out at any time, HELP for help.
Because these screens are inside an authenticated account, a public reproduction of the exact consent controls and message samples is published at https://app.prefca.com/sms-opt-in-evidence.
5. How to opt out
Reply STOP to any PrefCA message and you will not receive further notification messages at that number. PrefCA also honors STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, REVOKE, OPTOUT. An opt-out applies to every organization that uses PrefCA, not only the one that sent the message.
You can also revoke SMS consent at any time under Account → Notification preferences.
If you later want messages again, reply START, UNSTOP, YES from the same phone. That clears the opt-out and restores the consent you had before you replied STOP. If you revoked consent in the app instead, grant it again under Notification preferences.
6. Help
Reply HELP to any PrefCA message for assistance, or email support@prefca.com.
7. Costs
PrefCA does not charge for text messages. Standard message and data rates from your wireless carrier may apply. Contact your carrier for details about your messaging plan.
8. Privacy
Your phone number is used only to send you the PrefCA messages described above and to honor your opt-out. PrefCA does not sell, rent, or share your phone number or SMS consent with third parties for their own marketing. Messages are delivered through a messaging provider acting as our service provider.
Our general privacy practices are described in our Privacy Policy at https://app.prefca.com/privacy.
9. Supported carriers
SMS is supported on major United States wireless carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and their affiliated networks. Wireless carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
